Institute Awards

The Institute presents a number of awards each year. Some of these come from nominations from Institute members.
You are encouraged to nominate suitable candidates for these awards.

The
Roy Sharpe Prize

For a significant contribution through research and development in any branch of NDT to the benefit of industry or society.

Certificate and £300 cash.
Sponsored by an Associate member of the Institute.
Any research worker(s) may be nominated.
Nomination required. This should show the significance and the benefit to industry or society.
NDT Technical
The
Nemet Award

For an outstanding contribution to the practice of NDT (by an individual).
Certificate and £500 cash from trustee fund set up by
Dr Tony Nemet.
Any individual.
Nomination required. This should show the contribution to the practice of NDT. Encouraging the wider use of NDT, especially by small companies, should also be mentioned if applicable.

Trade Group
The
Hugh MacColl Award

For a distinguished contribution by an individual to the teaching or training of NDT or condition monitoring.

Certificate and £300 for buying training, books etc from Institute funds.
Any individual Institute member is eligible.
Nomination required. This should show the contribution to teaching or training of NDT.
MQ&E
The
Tony Lager Award

For meritorious service to an Institute Branch by an individual.
Framed certificate.
Any individual Institute member is eligible.
Branches to nominate. Contributions to Branch and other Institute activities should be described.

The
Jim Cottier Travel Scholarship

To aid the professional development of BINDT members by attending an overseas conference.
A contribution of up to £600 for travel expenses.
Any Institute members who are in the early stage of their careers, ie who are either students or are within the first five years of full-time employment.

Candidates should submit an application which demonstrates how the candidate will benefit professionally from the proposed visit.

The
William Gardner
Award

For the best paper in the proceedings of the NDT Annual Conference by a person in the early stages of their career.
A certificate, a cash sum of £200 and free Institute membership for one year.
Anyone who is either a student or within the first 5 years of full-time employment, who presents a paper at the Annual Conference and has the paper published in the Proceedings.

Anyone who notifies the Conference organisers when submitting their paper that they meet the criteria.
NDT Technical
The
John Grimwade Medal

For the best paper published in Insight in the preceding year.
An engraved silver medal + certificates to author and co-authors.


Any Institute member who has published in Insight will be automatically considered
(co-authors need not be members but only the lead author receives a medal).

Automatic.
Shortlist prepared by Technical Committee.

The
Ron Halmshaw Award

For the best paper on radiography published in Insight in the preceding year.
Certificate and a cash sum
of £300 from trustee fund
set up by Dr Ron Halmshaw.

Anyone who has published a radiography paper in Insight will be considered.
Automatic. Shortlist prepared by Technical Committee.
NDT Technical
The
T H Cole
Award

For the Institute Branch with the best percentage increase in membership during the preceding year.

Gavel and engraved block held for one year. Also a framed certificate.
All Institute Branches automatically qualify.

MQ&E
The
COMADIT Prize

For a significant contribution through research and development in any branch of Condition Monitoring to the benefit of industry or society.

Certificate and a cash sum of £300.
Any research worker or group of named research workers.
All members of the CM Technical Committee are invited to submit nominations for the Prize.
CM Technical
The
Len Gelman Award

For the best paper in the Proceedings of the CM Annual Conference by a person in the early stages of their career.
A certificate, a cash sum of £200 and free Institute membership for one year.
Anyone who is either a student or within the first 5 years of full-time employment, who presents a paper at the CM Annual Conference and has the paper published in the Proceedings.

Anyone who notifies the Conference organisers when submitting their paper that they meet the criteria.

Notes:
  1. Nominations for the Roy Sharpe, Nemet and Hugh MacColl awards are welcomed from any Institute member.
  2. Nominations should be submitted to BINDT by 31 March for awards covering the previous calendar year.
  3. Awards relating to the previous calendar year are normally presented at the NDT Annual Conference in September.
  4. The COMADIT Prize and The Len Gelman Award are normally presented at the CM Annual Conference.
