Developments in inspection and structural health monitoring using ultrasonic guided waves

This talk presents the application of low-frequency ultrasonic guided waves to the NDT of pressure containing and structural components, which has been one of the few really novel developments in the NDT field over the past 10 years. The principal application has been for the rapid screening of long lengths of pipe, mainly for corrosion, in the oil & gas industry. As this technology has matured, there have been advances in both capability, ie improvements in detection and the ability to determine flaws in more detail, and in the applications that are possible. This presentation explains some of the fundamentals of this technology and describes some of the more recent developments at TWI, including the application to structural health monitoring.
