Acoustic Emission (AE) is a real-time NDT technique which uses the transient stress-waves from microstructural changes or defect growth in a solid material to enable defect detection, location and often a direct assessment of structural integrity. AE may be generated by: cracking or delaminations in composite structures such as aerospace components, storage tanks and pipes; crack growth or deformation mechanisms in metallic structures such as pressure vessels; nugget formation and expulsion in spot welding; leaking fluids in valves; bearing failures; and corona discharge. This text covers the application of AE systems to defect detection and assessment of structural integrity. It covers the basic principles, codes and standards, and sensors and instrumentation.
