Engineers' Registration
As a Licensed Member of the Engineering Council
(EC), the Institute encourages suitably qualified members to register with the EC. The Institute can assess those members for admission to the EC
Register. The specific requirements and opportunities for registration are dealt with below.
The register has three sections: Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech).
Under its Royal Charter, EC
regulates the engineering profession in the UK and formally represents the interests of UK engineers abroad. It is a Designated Authority under the current General Systems Directives.
All candidates for registration as Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer or Engineering Technician must satisfy the competence standards set by EC
and be members of the appropriate Licensed Member Engineering Institution. Applicants must show that they have a satisfactory educational base, have undergone approved professional development and, at interview, must demonstrate their professional competence against specific criteria.
The UK-SPEC came into force on 1 March 2004, to replace SARTOR 3 (1997).
As UK-SPEC does not impose any extra requirements on applicants, anyone who was working towards registration under the previous SARTOR 3 rules will now be considered under UK-SPEC. The new arrangements for assessing people without exemplifying academic qualifications, including the possibility of submitting a technical report, became operative on 1 March 2004.
The Mature Candidate Route (MCR) ceased to be in operation when UK-SPEC took effect. The Senior Route also ceased to operate on 30th September 2005. The Technical Report is now an option available to candidates for registration who do not hold the exemplifying qualifications for registration, and is appropriate for engineers with sufficient career experience on which the technical report can be based.
CEng, IEng and EngTech now follow either the 'Standard Route' or 'Individual Route'. All requirements and information about the UK-SPEC can be found on the Engineering Council (EC) website:

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN – EngTech
Registration Route requires
- possession of one or more of the academic qualifications approved by the Engineering Council, for example BTEC/SCOTVEC Ordinary Certificate or equivalent in an approved subject.
- a minimum of 3 years' combined approved training and experience in NDT, condition monitoring, or allied technologies.
- general familiarity with all commonly used NDT methods, or demonstration of a high degree of competency in any one specific NDT technique or method, or in his/her particular specialisation.
- If a candidate is a corporate member of the Institute and holds at least a current PCN Level 2 qualification, the candidate is entitled to direct entry to Eng Tech registration without interview.
Candidates without the preferred academic qualifications may be able to apply for an Individual Route appraisal. This separate procedure, administered by The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT), involves an in-depth appraisal of the knowledge and experience acquired. Experienced, practicing professional Engineering Technicians are often found to have gained the necessary knowledge of skills for their job through working closely with other skilled colleagues over a number of years.
