Entry requirements
The grades of membership and entry requirements were revised at the end of 2002 to separate membership requirements and Engineering Council registration requirements. The revisions were also designed to rationalise the entry procedures whilst providing a structured and natural progression through the grades from Student or Practitioner to Member. The Grade of Fellow is still reserved for those who have had long experience of high calibre and have achieved a position of high responsibility.
Included is entry through specific NDT qualifications – PCN, CSWIP, ASNT, ASNT-TC-1A, British Gas, NAS 410 etc. Individuals holding these are accepted into membership providing they meet the relevant training and experience requirements, and they may progress to higher grades as they acquire higher levels of certification.
Members in the Practitioner, Graduate, Member and Fellow grades, together with Licensed Engineering Practitioners, may use post-nominal letters; these are detailed below.
Tax Relief
Institute subscriptions and Engineering Council registration fees normally qualify for full tax relief which may be claimed by employed persons who pay UK income tax. Quote reference C1/Sub/958 on the relevant tax return.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Grades and the entry requirements are summarised below. For convenience the PCN certification system has been used, but equivalents under other systems are also accepted by the MQ&E Committee.

LICENSED ENGINEERING PRACTITIONER
The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) operates a scheme for the Licensing of Competent Persons in the field of non-destructive testing.
The scheme is designed to recognise both the competence and the commitment of NDT technicians, and is an important step forward in the recognition of the NDT fraternity in the wider engineering community.
Personnel on the register will need to have current PCN certification, which satisfies the requirements of both European and International Standards for NDT Personnel Certification (BS EN 473 and ISO 9712), and should be in membership of The British Institute of NDT.
Personnel registered through this route will be entitled to use the post-nominal letters LEP.
