Owner and operator of the largest refinery in the UK, combining refining, lubricants and chemical manufacturing activities in a complex top-tier COMAH facility, has an opportunity to welcome a Materials, Welding and Corrosion Technical Expert into its engineering team.

Candidates should be degree qualified (metallurgy/materials engineering), ideally chartered and should have relevant materials, corrosion and welding engineering experience in an operational COMAH environment, ideally refining, petrochemical or chemical manufacturing.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialist engineering and technical support to the wider engineering and maintenance teams.

Candidates should have demonstrable experience or working knowledge of:
  • Plant inspection and QA/QC of fabrications, including welding and relevant NDT techniques
  • Working with operational engineering and maintenance teams, responding to technical queries on materials, corrosion and welding matters
  • Recommending appropriate materials, referencing relevant metallurgy specifications and operating envelopes
  • Applying corrosion degradation mechanisms, as per API code 571
  • Supporting asset management/equipment strategies.

The key responsibilities are to:
  • Be the principal contact for all materials, corrosion and welding engineering queries for the site
  • Support operational reliability by advising upon: appropriate materials selection; materials operating envelopes; pragmatic failure prevention measures; management of change reviews with respect to equipment integrity when unit operation changes; and asset management/equipment strategies
  • Support efficient operations by advising upon materials-related best practices and technologies
  • Provide materials engineering training, as required.
