At Lloyd's Register, we believe that life matters. As one of the world's leading classification societies, we're an organisation that's driven by principles rather than profit. Our world-class expertise and uncompromising commitment to safety means everyone who works here does something that matters – every single day.

We are seeking a Non-Destructive Examination Specialist to work within our UK-based Marine & Offshore Materials and NDE team, located at our Global Technology Centre on the University of Southampton's Boldrewood campus.

This rare opportunity to join our team offers a role with real variety and career development potential, providing our clients with NDE solutions and supporting our global network of field surveyors with technical advice and training.

To be considered for this role you will need to have a degree, or equivalent, in engineering, in addition to practical NDE qualifications, ie Level III PCN or equivalent in at least one method and Level II in the basic methods. Consideration will be given to candidates holding only Level II qualifications with a strong desire to progress to Level III.

You would be expected to hold Membership of an appropriate professional institution, and Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or be working towards achieving this.

You will need to demonstrate an in-depth experience of the marine or similar industrial environment relating to fabrication and in-service inspection, with a practical ability to develop NDE procedures for routine and novel NDE techniques. You will also be computer literate with the ability to operate NDE equipment utilising computer-aided analysis tools for automated inspections.

Job Responsibilities:
  • To undertake on-site auditing and verification work for internal and external clients, and produce clear and concise reports on the findings.
  • To perform assessments of NDE service providers and provide certification.
  • To update and maintain the Lloyd’s Register Rules and Regulations for NDE, and to ensure that emerging technologies are assessed for acceptance.
  • To mentor and coach other employees to improve their NDE skills, and to assist them in attaining and maintaining NDE qualifications.
  • To provide formal technical training, both internally and to external clients.
  • Participate in internal and joint industry research projects on advanced NDE techniques and applications.
