THE VENUE

CairnThe combined event will be held at The Cairn Hotel, Harrogate, near York. The Cairn was built during Harrogate's period as a spa town, during which people came from far and wide to 'take the waters'.

Now a major conference and tourist destination with a host of local attractions, Harrogate is easily accessible from all parts of the country and the Cairn Hotel, situated only minutes' walk from the centre of the fifteenth century spa town, is the ideal base for your visit.

The conference special rate for staying at the Cairn Hotel is £74.05 bed & breakfast per night including VAT.

Whether it is the majestic buildings and gardens of Harrogate itself which attract you, or the numerous high quality shops and boutiques, there is always a warm and inviting welcome at the Cairn.

YorkMinsterThe social programme will include a visit to York, arguably England's finest heritage city, offering an insight into England's infamous past, in what was home to all the great invaders of the last 2000 years; including the Romans, Saxons and Vikings. Founded by the Romans, York became the capital of Northern Britannia. The Roman Emperor Constantine was made Emperor of Eboracum (the Roman name for York) here in 360AD thus heralding the beginning of the modern age through his acceptance of Christianity. The city was the Saxon capital of Northumbria, after which the Vikings arrived, naming it Viking Kingdom, or 'JORVIK'. York is also home to the 13th century York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. An architectural masterpiece, it has the greatest collection of mediaeval stained glass in existence. Further to this, Clifford's tower is a symbol of the might of the mediaeval kings. Originally built by William the Conqueror, it was rebuilt by Henry III in the 13th century.

Fantastic panoramic views of York and the countryside from the tower show why it played such a key role in the control of northern England.

Castle HowardYorkshire is also home to Castle Howard, a magnificent 18th century house with collections of fine antique art and furniture. Set between two lakes, the breathtaking grounds of Castle Howard feature temples, lakes and fountains. Not far from here you will find York's railway museum, reputedly the largest in the world.

Also situated near York is 18th century Fairfax House. With outstanding collections of Georgian furniture, silver and ceramics, Fairfax House was voted Britain's best Georgian Townhouse. The famous JORVIK museum and attraction, a distinguished archaeological discovery, shows the remains of the Viking-age city of 'Yorvik', with 10th century streets and over 800 Viking artefacts.

With numerous award-winning attractions, York surprises, inspires and stimulates.
