An Assistant Bridge Inspector is sought to carry out both office- and site-based duties to support inspectors with planning and undertaking principal and general inspections. The successful candidate will also carry out inspections under supervision, while gaining experience in report writing using various formats. 

In this role, the successful candidate will develop towards becoming a BICS-certified Bridge Inspector, focusing primarily on gaining experience and structural knowledge. The role will also involve non-destructive testing (NDT) on various concrete and steel structures, as well as carrying out administrative tasks. 

Key accountabilities:

Office duties will include:
  • Desktop studies on structures
  • Introduction to writing risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) under supervision
  • Introduction to arranging equipment under supervision
  • Gaining experience with methods of inspection reporting, such as safety management intelligence system (SMIS), Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) forms and traditional hand-written format
  • Writing general inspection reports under supervision, using multiple methods
  • General administrative tasks.
Site duties will include:
  • Assisting other inspectors with their duties, such as marking up defects, taking notes and drawing site sketches
  • Carrying out general inspections under supervision
  • Carrying out some principal inspections to minor structures under supervision
  • Operating as a banksman on site when mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) are being used
  • Assisting with NDT work, such as carrying equipment, taking dust samples, recording notes, marking up test panels, etc.
The Assistant Bridge Inspector may be required to undertake additional duties, within reason, to ensure that the company’s overall requirements are met.

Required skills and expertise:
  • Driving licence (required)
  • IPAF certificate (desirable)
  • Confined space certificate (desirable)
  • Personal track safety (PTS) certificate (desirable)
  • CSCS operative (required)
  • First aider (desirable)
  • STE Level 4 (desirable) 
  • New Roads and Street Works Act – operative (desirable)
  • Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (desirable)
  • Civil engineering qualification (ONC as a minimum, HNC/D preferred) 
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook (required).
