A Bridge Inspector is sought to undertake principal and general inspections in accordance with BD 63/17. Primary duties will be office- and site-based, supporting senior inspectors as well as planning and undertaking principal and general inspections and generating reports in various formats. 

The successful candidate will develop from a BICS certified Bridge Inspector to a Senior Inspector, focusing on increased experience, structural knowledge and programme management capabilities. As such, the Bridge Inspector will still be required to lead inspection teams, provide supervision to junior inspectors, as well as be expected to write risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and organise equipment/ materials, but also deal with minor projects, from inception to completion under minimal supervision. Secondary duties will be to plan and undertake non-destructive testing (NDT) surveys and write reports to various concrete and steel structures, as well as contribute to the delivery of Tool Box Talks to other members of the team as part of group continuing professional development (CPD).

Key accountabilities:

  • Desktop studies on structures
  • Writing standard and non-standard RAMS
  • Arranging plant and equipment
  • Writing general and principal inspection reports using multiple methods of inspection reporting such as safety management intelligence system (SMIS) and Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) forms
  • Planning NDT inspections
  • Writing NDT reports
  • Manage minor projects under minimal supervision
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to junior Inspectors where appropriate (ie writing general and principal inspection/NDT reports using various methods).
Site duties will include:
  • Carrying out general and principal inspections to non-specialised structures
  • Carrying out principal inspections to specialised structures under supervision and continued mentorship
  • Undertaking NDT works, such as identifying test panels, organising appropriate equipment and staging works
  • Leading inspection teams
  • Delivering site briefings
  • Providing supervision and mentoring to junior Inspectors where appropriate (ie general and principal inspections to non-specialised structures and NDT techniques).
The Bridge Inspector may be required to undertake additional duties, within reason, to ensure the company’s overall requirements are met.

Required skills and experience:
  • NHSS31 certified – Bridge Inspector (required)
  • Driving license (full) (required)
  • IPAF certificate (desirable) 
  • Confined space certificate (desirable)
  • Personal track safety certificate (PTS) (desirable) 
  • CSCS operative (required)
  • First aider (required) 
  • STE Level 4 (desirable) 
  • New roads and street works act – operative (desirable) 
  • Site supervisor safety training scheme (desirable)
  • Civil engineering qualification (ONC as a minimum, HNC/D preferred) (desirable) 
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook (required).

This role will be primarily based in the Preston office, reporting to the Operations Manager. The successful candidate will be required to work nights, occasional weekends and stay away from home as per the requirements of the business. 

Working hours: 40 hours per week, plus nights/weekends where required.
