South West Metal Finishing, a leading supplier of quality metal finishing services, has an opportunity for an experienced Lead Inspector to join its team based in Exeter.

Established in 1931, South West Metal Finishing, part of the EIC Group, supplies high-quality metal finishing, anodising, paint finishing and non-destructive testing services to the aerospace, motor, marine, electronic and other engineering sectors.

Due to growth, the company is looking for a Lead Inspector. Reporting to the Quality Compliance Manager (QCM), the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that deliverable parts meet national, international and customer-specific requirements. 

Although the role is based in Exeter, travel to other company sites and customer sites may be occasionally required.

About the role:
  • Day-to-day inspection of completed orders, ensuring compliance against the order requirements of the customer
  • Day-to-day pre-inspection of incoming orders, ensuring compliance prior to release to the shop floor
  • Managing a team of four, cultivating an atmosphere of continuous improvement and an ethos of open communication that embraces the vision, mission and strategy of the business
  • Organising and prioritising the daily workload of the inspection department in line with the scheduled delivery plan
  • Ensuring all documentation is completed in line with company procedures
  • Supporting the QCM in conducting/facilitating internal audits
  • Calibrating and maintaining a log of measuring equipment (daily)
  • Assisting the QCM with the monthly review of calibration status and liaising with the team leaders and production staff for equipment requiring up-coming calibration
  • Ensuring that all documentation required for internal, customer and regulator audits are maintained and up to date
  • Raising internal non-conformance reports
  • Investigating and working closely with Quality Engineering (QE) to ensure sustainable corrective actions are implemented to avoid further occurrences
  • Raising and signing off certificates of conformity 
  • Informing the Quality Assurance Manager (QAM) when internal documents, including procedures, specifications and other work instructions, require amending
  • Attending internal material review board (MRB) meetings 
  • Ensuring that professional communications are used when liaising with customer contacts and suppliers to discuss and resolve issues 
  • Driving and embedding sustained QMS improvements throughout the business
  • Identifying the training needs of inspection and shop floor personnel, organising their training and following their development.
  • At least five years’ experience in a similar industry
  • Familiar with Nadcap/ISO 9100 or aerospace standards
  • Familiar with Six Sigma, PFMEA, 8D, 5 Why problem-solving tools would be an advantage
  • Able to communicate at all levels of the business
  • Able to use the MS Office suite of products, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, etc
  • Conversant with company systems, such as Orpheus and Q-Pulse, etc.
