With plans to expand its highly successful Non-Destructive Evaluation Group, TWI is seeking to appoint a Section Manager, based at its UK site in Middlesbrough.


The NDE Group specialises in the development of new inspection technologies to underpin engineering structural integrity across a wide range of industries.

This position will require regular travel both in the UK and abroad.

This position has been produced as part of an initiative known as Centre for Materials Integrity which is part funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Security clearance: You will require UK security clearance for this role.

Description of role:

The NDE Section manager will manage and lead on the development of new inspection technologies to underpin engineering structural integrity across a wide range of industries.

This position will require regular travel both in the UK and abroad. You will be working on TWI Middlesbrough new initiative known as Centre for Materials Integrity which is part funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This initiative is funded from 1 June 2018 until 30th May 2021 and your role will be counted as one full time equivalent. Please note that your position is not conditional upon the funding and that your employment will be governed by the terms attached herein. Please note that as this is a publically funded contract it may be necessary for a copy of your employment contract and salary slips to be provided to ERDF under audit.

 

Key accountabilities:

  • Develop the NDE section technology theme maps based on the existing technologies and products TWI offers to its clients in the area of NDE & Condition Monitoring.
  • Ensure the NDE section is managed to meet its financial and safety targets, as agreed with the Business Group Manager.
  • Manage the flow of work in the section, in co-operation with the Technician Group, to ensure that all deadlines and customer quality requirements are met.
  • Implementing an R&D programme for your Section that underpins the Group’s growth strategy and engages experts across TWI to generate IP, knowledge, data and ultimately new products and services.
  • Use existing and new public funding leverage effectively in order to expand the NDE section capabilities and offering.
  • Develop a culture of continuous operational improvement within NDE by working across internal boundaries for the benefit of customers and TWI, and engaging with peers in other Technology Groups, the laboratories and support services.
  • Leading and developing your Team to ensure they are engaged with their customers, and across TWI, and have the skills to deliver the Section’s element of the corporate plan.
  • Supervise, monitor and develop the section staff.
  • Manage the flow of work in the section through your team, in co-operation with the Technician Group, to ensure that all deadlines and customer quality requirements are met.
  • Lead a culture of continuous operational improvement within NDE by working across internal boundaries for the benefit of customers and TWI, and engaging with peers in other Technology Groups, the laboratories and support services.

Qualifications 
  • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline, together with a sound technical background.
  • You will preferably be working towards, or hold, Incorporated or Chartered status linked to membership of a relevant professional institute.
Skills
  • Track record of operational rigour, meeting safety, quality and schedule requirements.
  • The ability to juggle competing demands.
  • Good commercial skills.
  • Highly developed communication, networking and influencing skills.
 
Specific relevant experience
  • Demonstrated management experience in a comparable environment.
