A mechanically qualified person is sought for a Trainee NDT Inspector role to perform magnetic particle inspection (MPI). 

Job purpose:
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is conscientious and hardworking, with good communication skills and an eye for detail, to gain valuable skills in NDT of aerospace parts in the MPI process and mechanical inspection.

Once the successful candidate is trained in MPI, the role will involve carrying out NDT inspection of precision parts to verify that they meet the required high standards of quality in accordance with defined company specifications, procedures and inspection levels. When the MPI training is complete, mechanical inspection training will follow.

Colour contrast differentiation is a requirement and applicants must have the capability of distinguishing and differentiating contrast among colours and shades of grey for this method of NDT inspection. The ‘ISHIHARA’ test will be used or other suitable test methods to verify that applicants are not colour blind (this test can be requested as part of a normal eye test).

Main duties/responsibilities: 
NDT during the training and qualification period, which will take approximately four to five months to complete. Thereafter, it will be a 50/50 role between NDT and mechanical inspection. This is subject to change depending on the workload within each department.

Training:
  • Training will be funded and supported by the company and will include:
  • A five-day course in magnetic particle inspection at the South West School of Non-Destructive Testing
  • 530 h of hands-on experience 
  • Specific and practical examination at the Brighton site to become qualified in MPI to EN 4179 (NAS 410)
  • Mechanical inspection (training will be incorporated).
NDT inspection:
  • NDT inspection of precision components from in-house manufactured parts using the MPI process
  • Updating and maintaining paperwork associated with NDT inspection procedures
  • Maintaining all NDT equipment and carrying out required checks in accordance with the procedure
  • Liaising with subcontractors and suppliers when required
  • Liaising with the Senior NDT inspector in all NDT activities
  • Supporting annual AS 9100 Rev D and NDT audits.
Mechanical inspection:
  • Inspecting precision components from in-house manufacture/assembly, sub-contractors and suppliers associated with a specific contract
  • Updating and maintaining paperwork associated with inspection procedures
  • Liaising with subcontractors and suppliers when required
  • Sourcing inspection at suppliers when required.
Skills:
  • Experience in using precision measuring equipment – preferred (training given where required)
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2001 and ideally AS 9100 Rev D – preferred
  • PC literate – Word, Excel and database experience 
  • Work well in a team environment with good communication skills
  • Have an organised and methodical approach
  • Manufacturing experience (mechanical) – preferred
  • The ability to interpret engineering drawings – preferred (training given where required).
Qualifications:
  • A mechanical engineering apprenticeship/qualification or similar is preferred.
Experience:
  • Experience working in an engineering manufacturing environment.
