NDE Engineer

As NDE Engineer/Specialist you will have a chance to work in the Capability Acquisition team located in Core Design and Manufacture. This exciting role offers the opportunity to work within a growing nuclear industry, supporting the challenges of developing next-generation manufacturing technologies to support the next-generation nuclear propulsion plant. You will be involved in the identification, development and deployment of innovative and game-changing NDE processes and will be required to work closely with the New Product Introduction and New Facility ME teams, to ensure a coherent delivery of new manufacturing processes to support a new product in a new factory.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop and qualify NDE procedures (ultrasonic, radiography, dye penetrant and eddy current) required for the inspection of product in manufacture. This includes writing Technical Justification reports to demonstrate that the NDE process is capable and repeatable in line with the design requirements.
  • Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and provide technical support and guidance to engineers, technicians and operators within the team.
  • Be technically able to work independently without supervision on multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Be proactive and self-motivated in process improvement and learning from experience.

  • PCN Level 2 in Radiography and/or Ultrasonic and/or Eddy Current.
  • Experience in an engineering discipline/degree level education in an engineering discipline/ability to demonstrate equivalence via a trade apprenticeship or significant working experience.
  • Good degree of tolerance for managing pressure/stressful situations.
  • Capable of working and managing multiple tasks and programmes.
  • Able to significantly demonstrate a recorded and current practical competency and continual professional development.
  • Very good understanding and knowledge of a range of products, systems, their functionality and applications; an expert in the engineering principles, methods and procedures appropriate to the routine work.
  • Experience of direct customer contact and ability to exhibit suitable customer facing behaviours.
  • Good IT skills, to include use of Microsoft Office packages.
  • Able to travel between sites in Derby and across the UK.

  • PCN L2 Liquid Penetrant.
  • PCN L3 in Radiography.
  • PCN L3 in Ultrasonic Testing of Welds.
  • An understanding and knowledge of submarine nuclear systems, components and their functionality.
