Job details:

TWI is a world leading independent research and technology organisation, internationally renowned for its expertise in engineering, materials and joining technologies. The Materials Group at TWI deals with the characterisation and in-service performance of metallic, polymeric and other materials, including additively manufactured materials, corrosion resistant alloys, thermal spray and cold spray coatings. While most of its work is funded directly by industry (including aerospace, offshore wind, geothermal energy, waste-to-energy, hydrogen storage, medical, oil & gas and conventional power generation) it also conducts longer-term research, some of which is funded by the European Union and InnovateUK.

A small team of colleagues is responsible for identifying those themes within public funding calls that map onto TWI's technology roadmaps and strategy. They then work with the company's scientists and engineers to develop detailed proposals for collaborative research projects and identify suitable research partners across the UK and Europe.

Due to growth in the Materials Group, it is seeking to strengthen this core team to ensure continued successful management and submission of public funding proposals, including European Commission
and Innovate UK proposals.

The ideal candidate would be an Engineering, Science, Business or Economics graduate (MSc/PhD level) with experience of developing research ideas, writing proposals for funding and managing collaborative research projects at EU or UK level. The role also requires a proven ability to network effectively and build strong business relationships with key partners in industry and in other research organisations.

High quality communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal (in English and ideally at least one other major European language) are essential, as the successful candidate will need to be confident when communicating with project partners. Candidates will also need to be able to show that they are able to communicate research concepts and their relationship to market opportunities clearly and succinctly.

The main duties and responsibilities for this position are:

  • Maintaining awareness of industry trends and future technologies in materials and surface engineering.
  • Building contacts and networks, including attending and presenting at networking events.
  • Researching and liaising with industrial and research partners to gather information for the preparation of public funding proposals.
  • Developing commercial impact studies and business cases to support proposed research.
  • Proposal concept development.
  • Writing and collating consortium information for proposals and developing proposal budgets.
  • Working with UK and European consortium partners.
  • Proposal submission management; ensuring that proposals adhere to guidelines and internal procedures.

Candidates must demonstrate effective team-working skills and evidence of having worked in multidisciplinary groups and/or worked effectively across cultures. Advanced proficiency in MS Word is desirable. Candidates will need to be proactive and have the ability to work to deadlines and prioritise their own workload.
