New pipe measurement training course

09/10/2012

UK-based pipe measurement technology specialist company Optical Metrology Services (OMS) Ltd has launched a new two-day training course specifically tailored to the needs of oil & gas pipeline engineers.

The new course examines the different measurement methodologies available for measuring pipe dimensions correctly and accurately, particularly with regard to the fabrication and laying of offshore and onshore oil & gas pipelines.

The objectives of the course are to train delegates in the best practice methods and techniques to be used to achieve pipeline project targets, to demonstrate the correct methods of using tools and equipment in order to obtain the most accurate measurements, to highlight and objectively discuss the different measurement methods used to measure specified pipe dimensions, to give delegates a solid background in standardised measurement units, project quality and pre-qualification testing requirements, and to set a benchmark for industry best practice methods to be used to measure the dimensions of a pipe.

The course structure is very flexible and is split into a main body and individual pipe dimension modules, which can be added or removed to suit a particular customer’s needs and timescales. The courses are designed so that they can be delivered at the customer’s site anywhere in the world, or at OMS’s offices in Bishop’s Stortford (UK) or training facilities in Houston, Texas (USA).

The core content of the course comprises background information such as specified pipe dimensions, measurement units used, equipment accuracy, uncertainty, pre-qualification testing and quality requirements. The course also includes practical demonstrations of pipe measurement methods and techniques, as well as delegate measuring exercises in which attendees are given an opportunity to use the measurement equipment to measure specific pipe dimensions.

The course will also give attendees the chance to use a wide variety of measuring equipment, including laser distance sensors, digital thermometers, OMS’s straightness measurement tool, micrometers, Vernier calipers, ultrasonic thickness measurement gauges, OMS’s end dimensioning ‘PipeChecker’ tool, bevel protractors, surface roughness comparators and testers, radius and feeler gauges, as well as OMS’s own internal pipe weld inspection and girth weld profile tools.
