Solution for the measurement of wall thickness under obstruction by combining ultrasonic thickness gauge and dual shear wave transducers*

This presentation examines a recent solution presented at ECNDT that involves connecting two shear wave transducers in a pitch-and-catch configuration together with an A-scan-capable thickness gauge. This new method is known as dual shear wave (DSW). Similar in concept to time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) techniques, known for accuracy, this DSW, offers equally comparable corrosion depth accuracy results. Shear waves enable this technique to measure corrosion depth on both near and far surfaces, an improvement on TOFD capability. This method’s simplicity and ease of set-up make this research worth considering.
