Award criteria


Purpose: Awarded to the NDT Engineer apprentice achieving an excellent result at their end-point assessment in the year in question.

Details of the award: A certificate, £100 cash and an invitation to the NDT/CM Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation.

Eligibility: A BINDT apprentice who has achieved an excellent result at their end-point assessment in the year in question.

Nomination arrangements: The winner will be selected using the EPA scoring system.

2022/2023 winner: Jonathan Brent BEng IEng MInstNDT

The NDT Engineer of the Year Award for 2022/2023 has been won by Jonathan Brent BEng IEng MInstNDT.

Jonathan Brent is a Manufacturing Laboratory Technologist at Rolls-Royce Washington – Rotatives, UK.

Jonathan joined Rolls-Royce in September 2018 on the NDT Engineer apprenticeship scheme and graduated from the University of Northampton with a First- Class BEng in non-destructive testing in 2022, passing the apprenticeship end-point assessment (EPA) with a distinction.

As a penetrant testing (PT) Level 3, he is responsible for the fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) of critical rotating parts manufactured in the north east. He is the FPI process owner, including the Washington Campus fully automated robotic FPI line, and is working towards obtaining a Level 2 approval in magnetic testing (MT).

Outside of work, he is currently in his trainee year volunteering with Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team in the evenings and at weekends.
