About Us

The Institute presents a number of awards each year. Some of these come from nominations from Institute members. The proposer of the award should be a voting member of the Institute. If they are not, they will need to ensure the application is endorsed by an Institute voting member.

You are encouraged to nominate suitable candidates for these awards. Please refer to the details below and forward any nomination to the Secretary before the dates listed.

Notes

Nominations for the Nemet and Hugh MacColl awards are welcomed from any Institute member or non-member.
Nominations for the COMADIT Prize and CM Innovation Award should be submitted to BINDT by 31 January. Nominations for the Aerospace Award should be submitted to BINDT by 1 March. Nominations for all other awards covering the previous calendar year should be submitted to BINDT by 31 March.
Awards relating to the previous calendar year are normally presented at the Annual Conference in September.

Lifetime Achievement Award	To recognise a valuable and extensive contribution to the British Institute of NDT and the wider NDT/CM/SHM community by an individual who has been an active member of the Institute for an extensive period of time.	Full-time registration at the NDT Annual Conference with three night’s accommodation, an engraved decanter and glasses, together with a framed certificate signed by the President and the Chief Executive Officer, plus £300 cash. Recipient entitled to become a corresponding member of Council and any other committee if they so wish, subject to the usual exclusions.	The nominee must be reaching the end of their career and must have spent a substantial part of their career working in the field of NDT/CM/SHM or another Institute-supported discipline. They must have been a long-term active member of the Institute and, during that period, must have supported the Institute as an active committee member. The successful nominee will stand out as having made a considerable contribution towards the charitable objectives of the Institute through having been proactive in the promotion of its activities.	Nominations must be seconded by an elected member of Council and receive a 75% positive response from elected members who are in attendance on the day. Personal Contribution Award	To recognise a valuable and significant personal contribution to the British Institute of NDT and the wider NDT/CM/SHM community by an individual who has contributed to and influenced the wellbeing of the Institute.	A framed certificate signed by the President and the Chief Executive Officer, together with a personalised letter from the President, a gift to the value of £300 cash and an invitation to the NDT Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation.	The nominee must have been a long-term active member of the Institute (minimum of ten years) and, during that period, must have supported the Institute as an active committee member. The successful nominee will stand out as having made a considerable personal contribution towards the charitable objectives of the Institute.	Nominations must be seconded by an elected member of Council and receive a 75% positive response from elected members who are in attendance on the day. Special Contribution Award	To recognise a significant personal contribution to the British Institute of NDT or the wider NDT/CM/SHM community, but should not reflect a contribution that benefits an individual business or academic institution.	The award will consist of an invitation to the NDT Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation, together with a framed certificate signed by the President and the Chief Executive Officer and a personalised letter from the President.	The successful nominee must be an active member of the Institute. The award will recognise a significant contribution that may be a piece of groundbreaking research, delivery of an Institute project or objective, or a significant investment of effort in the service of Institute committees or Branches. It may be awarded at any stage of a member’s career and is not intended to be an award for long service as are the Lifetime Achievement and Personal Contribution Awards.	All committees are encouraged to nominate individuals. Nominations for the award will be reviewed by the Croxson Committee and recommended for ratification by Council. The John Grimwade Medal	For the best paper by an Institute member published in Insight in the preceding year.	An engraved silver medal for the lead author. All authors will receive a certificate and Institute pin.	Any Institute member who has published in Insight will be automatically considered (co-authors need not be members but only the lead author receives a medal).	Automatic. The Tony Lager Award	For meritorious service to an Institute Branch by an individual.	A framed certificate and £200.	Any individual Institute member is eligible.	Branches to nominate. Contributions to the Branch and other Institute activities should be described.	MQ&E
The T H Cole Award	For the Institute Branch with the best percentage increase in membership during the preceding year.	Gavel and engraved block held for one year. Also a framed certificate and £200.	All Institute Branches automatically qualify.	Automatic.	MQ&E
The Jim Cottier Travel Scholarship	To aid the professional development of a young BINDT member by attending an overseas conference.	A contribution towards travel, subsistence and conference fees, typically up to £1000 depending on particular circumstances (conference location, duration, etc).	Any individual full voting Institute member who is either a student or within the first five years of full-time employment.	Candidates should submit an application that demonstrates how they will benefit professionally from the proposed visit. The application must be supported by a referee, normally their tutor or manager.	Council

The Roy Sharpe Prize	For a significant contribution through R&D in any branch of NDT to the benefit of industry or society over a period of 10-15 years or longer.	A certificate and £350 cash. The Anne Birt Award	For a significant contribution to technology innovation, technology transfer or technology strategy in the field of NDT over a period of 5-10 years or longer.	A certificate, £300 cash and an invitation to the NDT Annual Conference Dinner with free registration for the day and one night’s accommodation. In the case of a group award, the invitation to the Conference Dinner will be made to one representative.	Nominees can be individuals or groups who have made a significant contribution to NDT technology through R&D, technology transfer into industry or developing strategy that has led to new technology development and exploitation. The Nemet Award	To recognise examples of outstandingly effective use of NDT/CM/SHM, especially those that might encourage small firms to apply NDT/CM/SHM methods for the first time, over a period of 5-10 years or longer.	A certificate, £550 cash from trustee fund set up by Dr Tony Nemet and an invitation to the NDT/CM Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation. In the case of a group award, the invitation to the Conference Dinner will be made to one representative.	Any individual is eligible.	Trade and Industry Group to nominate. Entries may be made by any company using NDT/CM/SHM or by a third party recommending a suitable candidate. Companies that supply NDT/CM/SHM equipment or provide NDT/CM/SHM services to industry are well placed to initiate such entries and candidates for the award may also submit entries themselves. The Hugh MacColl Award	For a distinguished contribution by an individual to teaching, training, education and professional development in NDT/CM/SHM over a period of 2-10 years or longer.	A certificate, £350 cash from Institute funds and an invitation to the NDT Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation. In the case of a group award, the invitation to the Conference Dinner will be made to one representative.	Any individual Institute member is eligible.	Nominations for the award will be reviewed by the MQ&E Committee. These should show the contribution to teaching, training, education and professional development in NDT/CM/SHM.	MQ&E
Gail Long Early Career Woman Engineer of the Year Award	To recognise women in the early stages of their careers in any field of NDT/CM/SHM and associated science, engineering and technologies with a contribution over a period of 2-5 years or longer.	A certificate plus £300 cash/bank transfer, an invitation to either the NDT/CM Annual Conference Dinner and one night's accommodation.	Nominees should be making a valuable contribution to the NDT/CM/SHM community either through R&D, technology innovation development or transfer, by developing strategies leading to new technology development and exploitation, by contribution to standards or by facilitating significant change in NDT/CM/SHM. Suggested guideline on 'early career' is within 10-15 years of starting work as an engineer (excluding career breaks).	Nominations for the award will be reviewed by the MQ&E Committee. Aerospace Award	For a significant contribution to the NDT/CM/SHM community within the aerospace sector over a period of 2-5 years or longer.	A certificate and free registration for the Aerospace Event of that year, where the award will be presented. (For groups, only one person will gain free registration.)	Individuals or groups who have made a significant contribution to NDT/CM/SHM through R&D, technology innovation development or transfer, by developing strategies leading to new technology development and exploitation, by contributing to standards or by facilitating significant change within the aerospace sector. Nominations can relate to a specific innovation or a number of innovations over their career, including in a support role.	Nominations for the award will be reviewed by the Aerospace Committee. The Ron Halmshaw Award	For the best paper on any aspect of industrial radiography or radiology published in Insight in the preceding year.	A certificate and a cash sum of £350 from the trustee fund set up by Dr Ron Halmshaw. (In the case of non-members, part of the prize would be one year's membership.) The BINDT Annual Conference Paper Award	An informal award presented at the end of the NDT Annual Conference for the best paper published in the conference Proceedings.	A £100 voucher.	Any author (or team of authors) who presents a paper at the NDT Annual Conference and has the paper published in the Proceedings.	A judging panel of four NDT Sub-Committee members is charged with the task of selecting the winner.	NDT Sub-Committee
The William Gardner Award	For the best paper in the Proceedings of the NDT Annual Conference by a student or person in the early stages (first five years) of their career.	A certificate, a cash sum of £300 and free Institute membership for one year (subject to eligibility).	Anyone who is either a student or within the first five years of full-time employment, who presents a paper at the NDT Annual Conference and has the paper published in the Proceedings.	Anyone who notifies the conference organisers when submitting their paper that they meet the criteria. A judging panel of four NDT Sub-Committee members will select the winner.	NDT Sub-Committee
Practitioner Award	To recognise outstanding achievement in the learning, sharing or execution of NDT/CM/SHM practice by a BINDT member.	£250 cash and a voucher to the value of £300 towards training at an approved training organisation (ATO)/authorised qualifying body (AQB).	Any BINDT member at Affiliate grade or higher showing outstanding performance in NDT duties and demonstrating professional excellence. Intended to recognise those who have acted as mentors, coaches or leaders of junior or less experienced colleagues or associates.	Any Member or Associate member of BINDT who participates in or contributes to the execution of NDT/CM/SHM. The Practitioner Committee will select the most suitable applicant and forward its nomination to the Croxson Committee for submission to Council for approval.	Practitioner
The Roger Lyon Apprentice of the Year Award	To recognise the outstanding achievement of a BINDT apprentice who has successfully completed their end-point assessment (EPA) through the Institute.	A certificate, a cheque for £300 and an invitation to the NDT/CM Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation.	A BINDT apprentice who has successfully completed their end-point assessment through the Institute.	All apprentices will be automatically shortlisted following their end-point assessment. Using the EPA scoring sheets, the prize will be automatically awarded to the apprentice with the highest score. Any top scores that are tied will be referred to the Education & Professional Development Committee, which will decide the winner.	Education & Professional Development
The NDT Operator of the Year Award	Awarded to the NDT Operator apprentice achieving an excellent result at their end-point assessment in the year in question.	A certificate, £100 cash and an invitation to the NDT/CM Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation.	A BINDT apprentice who has achieved an excellent result at their end-point assessment in the year in question.	The winner will be selected using the EPA scoring system. The NDT Engineering Technician of the Year Award	Awarded to the NDT Engineering Technician apprentice achieving an excellent result at their end-point assessment in the year in question.	A certificate, £100 cash and an invitation to the NDT/CM Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation.	A BINDT apprentice who has achieved an excellent result at their end-point assessment in the year in question.	The winner will be selected using the EPA scoring system. The NDT Engineer of the Year Award	Awarded to the NDT Engineer apprentice achieving an excellent result at their end-point assessment in the year in question.	A certificate, £100 cash and an invitation to the NDT/CM Annual Conference Dinner with one night’s accommodation.	A BINDT apprentice who has achieved an excellent result at their end-point assessment in the year in question.	The winner will be selected using the EPA scoring system. Annual NDT/CM Conference Travel and Attendance Award (one per conference)	To encourage attendance at the BINDT Annual Conferences by contributors from foreign nations.	A contribution towards travel, subsistence and conference fees, typically up to £750 with free full-time registration (depending on individual circumstances). The award will be paid after the conference on the presentation of suitable receipts directly to the Events & Awards Department.	Individuals from the profession of NDT/CM/SHM who wish to attend the Annual Conference but are unable to do so due to financial constraints. Applicants can be at an early career stage or experienced contributors.	Form to be completed by applicant on acceptance of paper to be presented at the NDT or CM Annual Conference.	–
The COMADIT Prize	For a significant contribution through R&D in any branch of CM to the benefit of industry or society over a period of 5-10 years or longer.	A certificate and a cash sum of £350. CM Innovation Award	For a significant contribution to technology innovation, technology transfer or technology strategy in the field of CM over a period of 5-10 years or longer.	A certificate, £300 cash and an invitation to the CM Annual Conference Dinner with free registration for the day and one night's accommodation for either the individual winner or, in the case of a group winner, a nominated representative.	Individuals or groups who have made a significant contribution to CM technology through R&D technology transfer into industry or who have developed a strategy that has led to technology development and exploitation. The Len Gelman Award	For the best paper in the Proceedings of the CM Annual Conference by a student or person in the early stages (first five years) of their career.	A certificate, a cash sum of £300 and free Institute membership for one year.	Anyone who is either a student or within the first five years of full-time employment, who presents a paper at the CM Annual Conference and has the paper published in the Proceedings.
