Under consideration is the universal mathematical model intended for representing an adaptive learning procedure. The technique in question is an alternative to the adaptive technologies based on the item response theory (IRT). Among the features of the proposed approach are both the possibility of taking into account temporal dynamics of the learning procedure and a smaller number of items to be performed for providing the given results. Obtained application examples include teaching mathematics to students, aircraft crew training on the full flight simulators as well as psychological testing. There are prospects for using the given approach in certification, education and training in condition monitoring. The structural equation modelling technique to evaluate quantitatively the effectiveness of the adaptive learning factor is presented.

Keywords: adaptive learning, Markovian random processes, adaptive trainer.
