AWE plc is contracted to the Ministry of Defence for all aspects of safety and performance of the UK's nuclear deterrent. As a result, AWE employs a wide range of scientific and engineering staff and has facilities dedicated to the design, manufacture and testing of conventional, nuclear and aerospace components. These areas are, in turn, supported by a team of NDT technologists.
The current NDT capabilities are dominated by radiographic methods, including film, filmless and computed tomography techniques ranging in energy from low kV through to multiple MeV. The company is also experienced in ultrasonic, eddy current, dye penetrant and thermographic methods.
AWE operates under a written practice dervived from EN 4179, with personnel within the NDT group certified at both Level 2 and 3.
