Record numbers for professional registration through BINDT

17/04/2015

In 2014, the British Institute of NDT (BINDT) saw more members successfully register with the Engineering Council at the Engineering Technician (EngTech) level than ever before, with 46 additional members achieving the grade by registration through BINDT. This represents an increase of over 50% on the 2013 figure and BINDT expects the number to continue rising, through natural growth as well as a direct result of strategic marketing plans. This outlines the fact that applications are not only accepted and encouraged through BINDT, but the application process simplified with entry routes tailored for NDT professionals. At the end of 2009, 173 BINDT members were registered as EngTechs, a figure that had increased to 323 by the end of 2014, representing a rise of more than 85% over four years.

BINDT has been licensed by the Engineering Council as a Professional Engineering Institute (PEI) since 1984 and, although the number of Engineering Council registrations through BINDT has steadily increased year-on-year, the introduction of the ‘Do Yourself a Favour’ (DYAF) campaign in 2009 and the PCN Level 3 pathway to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration launched in 2013 have both made a notable positive impact on registration figures.

BINDT is one of around 36 PEIs in the UK licensed to assess candidates for professional registration with the Engineering Council and processes applications from individuals for EngTech, IEng and Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration. As a PEI, the Institute is authorised to assess the competence and commitment of a candidate for registration and, once accepted, to promote and support the continuing professional development (CPD) and conduct of registrants.

BINDT offers a variety of entry route options through its unique Institute-specific schemes, providing candidates the chance to develop their knowledge and expertise, thus opening doors to new career opportunities and improved prospects for promotion.

The DYAF campaign offers an interview-free route to registration. Candidates who hold a PCN Level 2 certificate in any method and who meet the criteria for Graduate Membership of BINDT are eligible for direct entry to register simultaneously as an EngTech with the Engineering Council and a Graduate member (GInstNDT) of BINDT .

Following on from the success of BINDT’s DYAF campaign, the Engineering Council has now agreed that PCN Level 3 certification satisfies the knowledge and understanding required for registration as an IEng. Applicants for registration as an IEng must be members of BINDT and must undergo a Professional Review Interview (PRI). Normally, BINDT membership at the Member Grade satisfies the qualification requirement. The PCN Level 3 route to IEng is built on 15 acceptable combinations of PCN certification. A breakdown of these routes can be found on the BINDT website: bit.ly/1JMuWcM
