Working with ionising radiation – new application requirements

07/12/2017

As you will be aware, the new Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR17) within the UK come into force on 1 January 2018. One of the changes to be introduced by the revised regulations is the introduction of a risk-based approach in order to inform the HSE of your work with ionising radiation. There will now be three distinct tiers of providing notification to the HSE, these being:
  • Notification
  • Registration
  • Consent.

Those already working with ionising radiation will need to submit this information to the HSE between 1 January 2018 and 5 February 2018, even if you have previously provided information. There may also be a fee associated with resubmitting this information to the HSE. Please see the draft document, which details the notification, registration or consent process.

For more information on the new risk-based tiers and the associated fees involved, please visit the HSE webpage at: http://www.hse.gov.uk/radiation/ionising/notification-process.htm The link provides information on the graded approach online system that you will be required to use to notify the HSE.

The details on the HSE’s website have been published ahead of the online system going live to give those who expect to have to apply via the online system the opportunity to pre-prepare. Further, more detailed guidance is being developed and will be shared via the HSE’s webpages when the new regulations come into force.
