First BINDT Practitioner Award winner announced

13/12/2018

Jordan Willington of Ultramag Inspection Services Ltd has been named as the 2018 winner of BINDT’s new Practitioner Award.

Jordan joined Ultramag in July 2014 and started a three-year apprenticeship through the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB). His first year involved working four days a week at an approved ECITB training centre in Southampton and one day at Ultramag. By his third year he was working five days a week at Ultramag.

Over the three years, he passed all of his modules and projects and completed his apprenticeship with a BTEC Level 3 Diploma. It was during the second and third years of the apprenticeship that, under supervision, he gained experience and knowledge working alongside qualified inspectors carrying out NDT, reporting and assisting where necessary.

During 2015, he passed Level 2 PCN exams in visual testing (VT), penetrant testing (PT) and magnetic testing (MT), all with distinction. During this time he also obtained several health & safety qualifications.

Jordan has recently signed up for the NDT Engineering Technician apprenticeship, where he will learn ultrasonics, radiography and weld inspection, with a view to obtaining a PCN Level 2 in all three methods. He is very keen to learn and be involved with NDT and mechanical testing and is excited about undertaking a further apprenticeship, all with the knowledge that Ultramag wishes to keep him employed as he is proving to be a competent inspector with enthusiasm and a willingness to listen and learn. Jordan is registered with BINDT at Affiliate grade.

“Having completed an apprenticeship through the ECITB and obtaining a BTEC Level 3 Diploma, I wanted to learn more about non-destructive testing and weld inspection,” said Jordan.

“Ultramag has given me the opportunity to do this and follow a career path into NDT and materials testing. I have approximately two more years to go and aim to have PCN Level 2s in ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT) and welding inspection (WI) at the end of my apprenticeship.

“My work is very varied and I travel to different places most days. Although already gaining experience and knowledge, I hope to keep learning and carry on in this industry. I appreciate this opportunity and enjoy working with my colleagues at Ultramag.”

Chris Simmonds, Managing Director of Ultramag, commented: “I have met and employed many people over the years and consider Jordan to be one of the best young people I have trained and assisted through the early stages of their career. Customers often comment on his willingness, helpfulness and ability to understand their requirements. He is loyal, makes every effort to get things right, enjoys tasks and will always assist others, even when it has not been asked for.”

The Practitioner Award recognises outstanding achievement in the learning, sharing or execution of NDT or CM practice. Any BINDT Member at Affiliate grade or higher is eligible to be nominated, provided they show outstanding performance in their NDT duties and demonstrate qualities such as a consistently high standard of performance in a specific job, including service, loyalty, ethics and client satisfaction, have the potential to develop the depth or breadth of their NDT competence, display altruism in acting as a mentor or leader of junior or less experienced colleagues or associates and contribute to a specific project that has yielded technical and/or financial benefits for their employer or organisation.

The winner is awarded £250 in cash, plus a voucher to the value of £300 towards training with a BINDT Approved Training Organisation (ATO) or Authorised Qualifying Body (AQB).

Joe Heigold, Chair of BINDT’s Practitioner Committee, commented: “The Practitioner Committee members and I are pleased to see the first Practitioner Award being presented to a worthy recipient and now look forward to receiving nominations for the 2019 Practitioner Award and adjudicating all entries for the next recipient.”

Any Member or Associate Member of BINDT who participates in or contributes to the execution of NDT in the workplace may nominate a suitable candidate for consideration by the Practitioner Committee. Nominations are invited for the 2019 award and should be submitted to Karen Cambridge, email: karen.cambridge@bindt.org.
