Introducing TWI lecturer Neil Harrap

25/06/2019

Neil Harrap, TWI’s Advanced NDT Lecturer and Examiner, has a wealth of experience behind him, having worked for industry, the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Air Force.

Neil joined the Royal Air Force in 1976 as an aircraft mechanic and progressed to the role of airframe fitter in 1980, which is when he first became involved in NDT. In 1990 he moved to full-time NDT duties, supporting operations in the UK and worldwide as a field operative, team manager, trainer and radiographic specialist.

The training and career development of candidates has always been something that Neil has cared about. As a result, he has focused on continually improving the customer journey and the delivery of courses, which included him overseeing the introduction of eLearning to TWI’s suite of training options.

This then led to Neil being appointed as eLearning Product Manager, as well as Product Manager for NDT apprenticeships.

Having undertaken an apprenticeship of sorts with the armed forces, Neil can see the value of this type of work-based learning and experience for candidates, while also understanding the benefits of in-house training for business.

However, training is not the only aspect of TWI’s work that Neil is involved in, as he is also Principal Project Leader and NDT Business Development Manager. This area of his work sees him assist both UK and overseas regions in building and supporting their business, including presenting at international conferences and technical days.

One particular highlight is the progress Neil has made with advanced NDT training in Canada, while he has also been investigating the possibilities for TWI to expand its offering in South Africa.

While he has travelled around the world to represent TWI, Neil’s passion remains with investigating issues and finding solutions. A thirst for technology and advanced techniques has allowed Neil to rise to challenges and help develop processes and techniques for the future.

While Neil is currently looking into the introduction of artificial intelligence within NDT analysis, his drive continues to be in sharing knowledge and advancing the next generation of NDT experts and processes.
