Applus+ performs asset integrity using drones on ammonia stripper tower
26/06/2024
Applus+ in Canada was contracted to inspect its client’s 40 ft-high, 36"-diameter ammonia stripper tower on a five-year service contract.
This inspection examined the stripper tower’s containment boundaries and attachments internally and externally. A secondary goal was to improve asset integrity management efficiency and reduce risks associated with conventional inspection procedures. Applus+ presented innovative inspection solutions using drones, advanced data capture and tailored reporting via e-delivery to meet these goals.
Applus+ used cutting-edge unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with high-resolution cameras, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors and thermal imaging to inspect assets. These drones captured precise photos and data in a quarter of the time needed to evaluate key ammonia stripper tower internals.

Remote inspection of confined spaces and hard-to-reach locations reduces human exposure to hazardous settings and the need for a safety team. Data from these inspections was processed using advanced analytics tools to discover faults, corrosion and structural weaknesses and unique reports were developed.
Applus+ is a worldwide leader in the testing, inspection and certification sector.
