06/05/2022
BINDT Corporate Member CGM CIGIEMME S.p.A. is an Italian company and a world-leading manufacturer of non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment, with a worldwide network covering over 30 countries.
CGM, which stands for Corrado Gianni Milano, the name of the company’s founder, has been delivering technological excellence and cutting-edge NDT solutions for more than 60 years, since 1958.
The company has become known as a reliable and trustworthy supplier of bespoke systems for magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and liquid penetrant inspection (LPI), with clients from diverse industries in various parts of the world. CGM is currently exporting over 70% of its MPI and LPI systems, accessories and consumables to more than 40 countries around the world and the goal is to cover the entire map.
Among CGM’s customers are some of the largest players in the aerospace, steel-making, railway and automotive industries.
With 100% of the design and manufacturing being carried out at the CGM headquarters near Milan, Italy, the company has a long history of offering a wide range of high-quality MPI and LPI equipment, from small portable systems to highly customised automatic systems.
“From the very beginning, we have been customising our systems to meet the standards and specific application needs of our clients and end-users. A high level of flexibility in design and manufacturing is our major strength and competitive advantage,” said Federico Raggio, CGM’s Managing Director.
Giorgio Savasta, the company’s President, added: “For us, there is no mass production; we offer ‘bespoke tailoring’. Each industry has its own specific needs, regulations and its unique mentality.”
“We put particular attention on the detail and, in my opinion, this is what makes the difference,” concluded Federico.
CGM has a proven track record for reliability, robustness and durability of the systems it designs and manufactures. Thus, the CGM technical assistance team has recently performed calibration of one of its oldest systems: an automatic MPI system for the inspection of automotive crankshafts that has been in operation for around 42 years, since 1979!
One of the keys to the long and successful history of CGM CIGIEMME S.p.A. is the company’s propensity to constantly search for innovative solutions aimed at optimising the cycle time and energy consumption of the inspection systems it designs and builds. Particular attention is paid to the aspects related to workplace safety.
For these reasons, CGM has been making substantial investments in research and development (R&D) activities aimed at:
- Reducing the environmental impact.
- Increasing the safety of the workplace environment.
- Constantly improving the ergonomics of the systems being designed and manufactured.
- Increasing the inspection quality and reliability.
- Developing human-machine interface (HMI) solutions that ensure a user-friendly experience.
- Developing a dedicated report for each inspected part.
- Designing systems to meet the most rigorous audit requirements of external certifying bodies.
These R&D goals are being achieved through the work of a team comprising new-generation engineers and technicians and senior technical staff members who have been with the company for many years. The R&D activities are headed by Luigi Viviani, Level III in MPI and Head of the MPI Design Department at CGM. Luigi has over 40 years of experience at the company and is a ‘father’ of many innovative solutions for the NDT industry developed over the years that are well known around the world.
In addition to R&D investments, CGM has also recently expanded its production facilities by acquiring a new workshop with a total area of 2500 m2. Assembly of an automatic LPI system with an anthropomorphic robotic arm for product application is currently underway in this brand-new production facility.
