Ermewa advances predictive wagon maintenance with AI integration

Ermewa has implemented a predictive maintenance solution powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise wagon tracking and extend asset lifecycles across its extensive European fleet. This is reported by the railway transport news portal, Railway Supply.
This advanced system, developed in collaboration with USA-based Amsted Digital Solutions (ADS), uses on-board telematics to determine the wagon load status and mileage. The AI adapts continuously, analysing vibration and motion data without relying on pre-coded fault signatures.
The AI learns in real time, responding to variations in wagon type, bogie design and route topography. As it does not require fixed rules, the technology enables precise diagnostics in dynamic environments and, as the system operates through existing telematics gateways, no new hardware or sensors are necessary. This simplifies installation and reduces costs.
Edge computing lies at the core of the solution, allowing data processing directly on board. This ensures high-speed analytics, maintains data integrity and keeps diagnostics running even in low-connectivity areas. Even in remote rail corridors, Ermewa maintains full oversight of asset performance and health.
According to John Felty, ADS Managing Director, the AI roll-out proves the enduring value of telematics innovation. “Activating the technology across the full fleet, including legacy hardware, shows that digital upgrades can be applied retroactively,” he explained.
Due to wireless updates, Ermewa can now deploy new features such as brake failure alerts, bearing wear detection and wheel condition monitoring without physical access to the wagon.
