Argyll Ruane enhances eddy current training and examination capability

27/04/2026

Argyll Ruane has enhanced its eddy current testing (ET) of welds capability through targeted investment in new samples and the refurbishment of current training and examination samples, improving consistency, technical robustness and alignment with industry requirements.

Improved examination capability

Eight new examination samples have been introduced alongside the refurbishment of existing inventory, creating a suite of 30 samples across the company's Sheffield and Dunfermline sites. All are fully compliant with PCN24/Authorised Qualifying Body (AQB)/REQ/ET requirements.

Nathan Bate, Chief Examiner at Argyll Ruane, said: “This investment ensures candidates receive consistent and fair practical examination conditions through high-quality, real-world representative samples.”

Nathan is also a member of the Eddy Current Testing Industry Sector Working Group (ETISWG) at BINDT, contributing to the maintenance and advancement of ET certification standards across the industry.

Upgraded training resources

Argyll Ruane is also refurbishing and recoating its suite of over 50 training samples to maintain durability and quality, supporting practical learning in realistic inspection conditions.

Tony Stubbs, NDT Trainer at Argyll Ruane, commented: “By ensuring training samples are closely aligned with industry conditions, students are better equipped to demonstrate competence in defect detection, signal interpretation and inspection techniques.”

These improvements complement recently updated training materials, including course notes, workbooks and assessments, strengthening both theoretical understanding and practical application.

Supporting ET competence

High-quality training and examination materials are essential for developing competent non-destructive testing (NDT) personnel. This approach ensures candidates gain the skills and confidence required to apply eddy current techniques effectively in industry.

By continuing to invest in their resources, Argyll Ruane provides a consistent, high-quality training and examination environment, providing candidates the best possible opportunity to succeed.
