Lavender International and Castings Technology partner to expand access to Gamma Calculator for radiography training and industry use

20/04/2026

Lavender International NDT has announced a partnership with Castings Technology Ltd to support continued industry access to the Castings Technology Gamma Calculator, a long-standing tool used to assist understanding and application of gamma radiography principles. The collaboration will see a co-branded version of the calculator produced for integration into Lavender’s radiographic training activity, while also ensuring Castings Technology’s name remains firmly associated with the product’s heritage and ongoing relevance.

Whilst radiographic techniques and systems continue to evolve, the underlying fundamentals of gamma radiography remain consistent. Training providers and employers alike continue to place emphasis on competence in areas such as exposure planning, source activity and decay, distance effects and the practical interpretation of how variables influence image quality and inspection effectiveness. Lavender International has said the partnership is designed to keep these fundamentals accessible, tangible and ‘front of mind’ for technicians, particularly those developing capability through structured training routes.

“The gamma calculator is a fundamental tool to any aspiring radiographer; it is the backbone of what we do when using gamma, first time every time to maintain the ‘as low as reasonably practicable’ (ALARP) principle. My deepest thanks to Castings Technology for allowing this vital technology to be dual-branded and maintain its rightful place in the radiographic testing (RT) world,” said Andrew Greenwood of Lavender International.

Under the agreement, Lavender has procured an initial batch of co-branded calculators for use across its radiography programmes. The updated format includes Lavender branding positioned alongside Castings Technology’s identity, reinforcing the origin of the tool while aligning with Lavender’s training delivery.

“This initiative represents a further extension of our long-term and valued association with Lavender International. The design and branding refresh of our Gamma Calculator will continue to provide an invaluable tool for many years to come,” commented Richard Cook, Castings Technology.

Both organisations highlighted the practical value of keeping proven training aids in circulation. Lavender noted that tools such as the Gamma Calculator can help technicians strengthen confidence with core principles, supporting more consistent decision-making and improved understanding when planning radiographic work. For employers, the collaboration is positioned as a small but meaningful contribution towards strengthening competence: helping technicians progress from ‘following a technique’ to understanding why parameters matter and how to check them.

The announcement is also being positioned as an example of industry collaboration that preserves proven resources rather than allowing them to fade out of routine use. Castings Technology’s involvement ensures the tool’s heritage is maintained, while Lavender’s use in training keeps the calculator active and visible to the next generation of radiographers.
