TWI ready for nuclear renaissance
09/12/2010

In the UK, provision of suitably qualified welders, welding engineers, welding inspectors, NDT operators and welding coordinators is crucial to ensure that the supply chain has the skills in place to satisfy the competence requirements of the nuclear new build programme. Cogent has identified potential shortages in these areas and TWI, as a member of the National Skills Academy Nuclear, is working with industry bodies, employers and training centres to plan appropriate provision.
Additionally, through its worldwide network of training centres, TWI is poised to deliver similar training to support nuclear new build programmes in key markets such as China and India.
As a well established training provider to the nuclear industry, TWI has customers across the supply chain, including power utilities, site operators, regulators, fuel cycle companies, government organisations, engineering contractors and equipment manufacturers.
TWI delivers its full portfolio of courses to the industry, including ‘off the shelf’ products such as welding engineering, welding inspection, plant inspection and NDT, as well as tailormade products such as welder training and qualification and fitness for service. Courses are accredited to internationally recognised schemes such as CSWIP, IIW/EWF, ASNT and PCN.
TWI’s nuclear training capability is backed by over 40 years of experience in providing R&D and consultancy services to the industry. TWI has delivered over 800 projects covering asset management surveys, plant assessment and risk analysis, repair and advanced fabrication, structural integrity modelling, non-destructive testing, technical justifications, safety case reviews, and supply chain development.
Dr Chris Peters, TWI’s Global Training and Examination Manager, said: “As the world’s largest and most influential training organisation for welding, inspection and NDT, TWI has the requisite capabilities and industry knowledge to meet the skills needs of nuclear new build programmes around the world.”
