SGS continues to broaden the scope of services

15/12/2011

During the week of 26-30 September 2011, the SGS tutors at the Shanghai facility received a ‘train the trainer’ session specific to UT nodes and nozzles. This was carried out by inviting to China Mr Dave Lavender, who is both a Co-Managing Director and also a very experienced trainer with Lavender International. Jason Scott, who set up the training centre for SGS, and Dave Lavender first met nearly 20 years ago. Jason later worked for Lavenders from 1997 to 2004, after which he joined SGS. This was a perfect opportunity to work together again.

SGS is now in its fourth year of providing EN473-compliant training courses in China. As such, SGS invests in quality and is eager to raise the importance of having NDT inspectors independently certified in China. After an initial start-up offering MT, PT, VT and UT plate and pipe courses, SGS has continuously upgraded its scope of services through significant investment by purchasing specially fabricated samples.

Examples of recent additions to scope are  RT welds and castings plus time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) and now with the recent project, UT ‘T’ welds, nodes and nozzles. Now that the ‘train the trainer’ session is completed, SGS is approved by BINDT to provide both PCN training and examinations for UT – 3.7 (constructional T joints), 3.8 (nozzles) and 3.9 (nodes).

SGS has consistently invested to achieve the additional scope of training services it can offer over recent years and is proud of the dedication of the team in China who are constantly developing themselves and the business.
