Rope access division boosts company performance

An Aberdeen-based provider of training and consultancy services is predicted to achieve a turnover of £1 million within its second year of trading, on the back of the launch of its new rope access division.

Launched with the support of the Rigmar Group, the NDT and IRATA rope access training provider started trading in September 2012. Within its first 10 months, the Rigmar Training Centre secured accreditation from BINDT and IRATA, as well as ISO 9001: 2008 certification from the DNV, and reached a turnover exceeding £300,000 with associated profitable trading.

Founder Ray Wilson said: “When we launched the Centre, our vision was to create a centre of excellence for NDT and rope access training, as well as consultancy services. The response from the marketplace has been extremely positive and, in addition to a high level of demand from the self-sponsor market, we have secured contracts with CAN Group, Scotia Automated Inspection Services (SAIS), Global REEL Group, Servtech and Axiom NDT, amongst many others.

“In the development of the Centre, we have called upon the expertise of our team and, with over 60 years’ cross-industry experience, developed an offering that is flexible to meet our customers’ requirements and schedules.”

Rigmar Training has already secured work overseas in countries such as Ghana, Kazakhstan, Angola and Nigeria. The company sees international operations as being a key growth area for the business. Ray continued: “With the support of our BINDT accreditation, we are in a fortunate position that we can deliver training at our East Tullos Training Centre or offer the convenience of having training delivered on site. In addition to our work in the North East of Scotland, we are involved in projects internationally and have already visited 27 countries to support the execution of training updates and nationalisation projects.”

Ray is set to travel to Ghana in October and Tengiz, Kazakhstan in November to support AquaTerra and Servtech, respectively, in the implementation of nationalisation programmes. Under these projects, Ray will access any skills gaps and develop a training plan to ensure all team members are trained to an internationally-recognised level.

Speaking of the future, Ray said: “Rigmar Training is always on the look-out for new opportunities and ways to improve service satisfaction. Feedback from our customers has revealed an increased focus on competency-based training programmes. We are currently seeking approval that will enable us to deliver industry-leading competency systems. This will allow us to assess an individual’s competence in the skills, knowledge, understanding and experience required to carry out NDT and rope access activity.”

To support this move, the company will be looking to appoint four new members of staff, increasing the training team to 15 before the end of the year.
