Corrosion mapping on a new level

10/01/2013

Two of the UK’s leading NDT equipment manufacturing companies have teamed up to produce what they claim is a superb corrosion mapping system that is stirring up enthusiasm across the globe. Technology Design and Silverwing UK manufacture equipment for the advanced ultrasonic market and have brought their respective skills together, the result of which is a marriage between the Rapid Motion Scanner (RMS) from Silverwing and the range of computerised ultrasonic acquisition systems from Technology Design.

The RMS is a large-format XY scanner that is capable of scan speeds in excess of 700 mm (27”) per second, translating into 2.5 m2 (27 ft2)/hour at a 2 mm × 2 mm resolution or 13 m2 (140 ft2)/hour at 10 mm × 10 mm. This remarkable scanner, with its powerful drive motors, strong magnetic wheels and ingenious probe actuator, can traverse obstacles such as weld caps that would pose an impenetrable barrier to most other scanners with ease.

The TD range of acquisition systems includes the TD Focus-Scan, TD Handy-Scan, TD-Scan and TD Pocket-Scan. Using either pulse echo or phased arrays, these systems control the acquisition and analysis of data through state-of-the-art electronics and the well-established TD-Scan software. Fast data throughput displayed in several amplitude and peak modes with offline re-gating, colour pallet and measurement tools are just some of the advanced analysis tools available.

The integration of the system was completed in October and the first sale was completed and delivered in the UAE in early November. Further sales have been made in the Far East, with several enquiries from around the world. The synergy between the two companies ensures a quality product with excellent back-up support that opens a new dimension in large-area condition assessment.
