Applus earns covetable RoSPA Order of Distinction

15/07/2011

The UK organisation RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) has recently presented its Order of Distinction to Applus RTD UK Ltd in its prestigious Occupational Health and Safety Awards scheme for 2011. This Order recognises the 15 consecutive Gold Awards (five of which were President’s Awards) which have been presented to Applus RTD UK over the last 16 years.

RoSPA launched its awards programme 55 years ago. It is designed to recognise aspects such as companies’ accident records, as well as health and safety management systems. These involve varied aspects across the business, such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

RoSPA’s Awards Manager, David Rawlins, stated that: “RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition. Applus RTD UK has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.”

Jack Gillespie, HSEQ Manager for Applus RTD UK, praised the efforts of everyone in the business in achieving such a superb award. He said: “Applus has an excellent health and safety culture, with everyone committed to ensuring that we are a safe and healthy place to work. From our apprentices to the Business Unit Manager, everyone is aware of the expectations of themselves and others. We encourage our people to take ownership of their safety and that of those around them, and our statistics prove that this is working, with our incident frequency rates decreasing year on year. The KPI’s set each year for HSE requirements also have an effect on our positive performance.” He continued: “We are delighted with this award from RoSPA and all that it represents. It is rewarding to have a tangible outcome for all of our concerted efforts and focus, although the greatest reward of all for us is our safe working environment and positive employee culture which fixes health and safety at its core – where it will always be.”

Bengt Eide, Applus Regional Manager for North West Europe, the business unit which contains the UK, is delighted with this award. He stated: “I would like to add my personal thanks and congratulations to everyone in the UK business on the excellent teamwork and passion that have cumulated in this award. I would also like to thank Jack for his outstanding professionalism and leadership, which have both kept us on track in our day-to-day operations and driven our strategy for improvement in terms of health and safety.”

The majority of RoSPA’s awards are non-competitive and mark achievement at bronze, silver and gold levels. Organisations that continuously maintain high standards can win gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction. Competitive awards are also presented and these cover more than 20 sectors. In addition, specialist awards recognise excellence in specific areas such as the management of occupational road risk. The awards, which were presented at a gala occasion in Birmingham on 10 May 2011 (coinciding with the Safety & Health Expo 2011), were sponsored by NEBOSH, the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health.
