Pipe measurement specialist Optical Metrology Services (OMS) Ltd was recently recognised for its innovative pipe measurement products and services by The Pipeline Industries Guild.OMS received the runners-up prize for its presentation on ‘Pipe End Dimensioning and Fit-Up Solutions’ at The Pipeline Industries Guild’s Northern Branch Innovation Day, held on 2 February 2011 in Warrington, Cheshire.
The event was aimed at providing industry suppliers and contractors with the chance to exhibit their innovative products and services, as well as providing opportunities for networking. In the evening, 12 exhibitors, including OMS Director of Client Solutions, Hugh Davies, gave presentations to a panel of judges drawn from Pipeline Industries Guild officials.
Since its formation in 1957, The Pipeline Industries Guild has evolved to become the only association worldwide to cater directly for the needs of the pipeline industry, regardless of engineering discipline, application or qualification. The Guild’s membership comprises those with interests in pipelines transporting hydrocarbon products, chemicals, water, wastewater and many other substances, both onshore and offshore. All are governed by the industry’s twin need to combine quality with safety, whilst at the same time meeting all the latest environmental and legislative requirements.
Optical Metrology Services’ Hugh Davies commented: “We are delighted to receive the runners-up award, which once again confirms Optical Metrology Services’ continued success in providing the global pipeline industry with innovative pipe measurement and inspection solutions. Our end dimensioning products and services, for example, are being utilised worldwide by major oil and gas companies and their contractors. OMS continues to invest in new measurement technologies in order to remain at the forefront of pipe measurement and inspection.”
The welding of fatigue-sensitive SCR and flowline pipes to tight specifications is critical. OMS offers full measurement and inspection services for the end dimensioning of fatigue-critical SCR and flowline pipes, which are destined for use in deepsea subsea oil and gas applications. OMS offers professional, accurate and rapid measurement of pipe end dimensions, including the management of AUT (automatic ultrasonic testing) calibration block selection and use, software analysis tailored specifically to match the client’s requirements, and end-to-end matching (without counterboring) or counterbore parameters can be provided (removing minimum WT).
For end dimensioning, OMS utilises its own automatic Pipe Checker™ laser measurement tool, which is capable of measuring more than 2000 ID and 2000 WT measurements for each pipe end in less than 20 s. The tool is accurate to 0.05 mm and enables OMS staff to measure a minimum of 200 pipe ends in a single shift. This means less time on site, minimising project delays and costs for the customer.
