Vibration measurement at Bäckhammar

08/05/2025

SPM Instrument AB has received a strategically important order from Nordic Paper’s mill in Bäckhammar in Värmland, Sweden, for a larger volume of Airius LTE-M wireless vibration sensors.

The Airius LTE-M sensor measures temperature and vibration in three directions up to 5 kHz. Measurement data is transmitted over Swedish telecom operator Telia’s cellular network and saved in the Condmaster Ruby analysis and diagnostics software, which has long since been installed on Nordic Paper’s local network. Measuring results can be analysed using time signals and fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectra to identify the type of machine damage. The sensors will be installed on critical equipment to provide early warning of deteriorating machine condition and avoid unplanned production stoppages and breakdowns.

Jesper Gustafsson, Preventive Maintenance Manager, said: “This investment means that we will further increase our machines’ operational reliability and free up time for our preventive maintenance engineers to spend on analysis and improvement work. Wireless monitoring is the next step in our journey towards a more automated factory.”

With approximately 260 employees, Nordic Paper Bäckhammar is the largest of Nordic Paper’s five mills. The Bäckhammar mill produces unbleached pulp and one of the world’s most robust kraft papers. The mill has two paper machines and an annual production capacity of 230,000 tons of pulp and 159,000 tons of paper.
