TWI delivers EN 473 digital radiography course with certification
09/10/2009

Digital radiography systems have advanced in recent years. Image quality has improved to the point where the quality is good and in some cases better than conventional film radiography. However, a good understanding of the various digital radiography systems is essential to understand the advantages and limitations of digital imaging within radiography.
The course offered by TWI is tailored to mainstream industrial applications. These include casting inspection, weld inspection and corrosion monitoring using profile and tangential radiography, all of which are finding increasing use within the oil and gas industry. A thorough look at the available digital radiography standards and hands-on practical sessions give students a good understanding of the quality issues surrounding digital imaging, including signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), spatial resolution (SR/BSR), linearity of digital systems and digital signal processing tools (DSP), to name but a few.
The digital radiography course at TWI Middlesbrough was well received by the students with excellent feedback. All the students felt they had substantially increased their knowledge in this subject area and would be able to make a good assessment of future digital systems with which they may become involved. The course lasts only one week including examination for certification, which does not put too much of a strain upon company personnel resources.
