Aerospace Workshop 12 April 2016: About the Workshop

12 April 2016, BAWA Centre, Filton, Bristol BS34 7RG, UK

Workshop on Emerging Technologies for Aerospace

This workshop, organised by the Aerospace Committee of BINDT, looked at the emerging technologies in the NDT world that it is hoped will help NDT practitioners in their daily jobs. In particular, the workshop focused on the structural health monitoring (SHM) aspect of the NDT practitioners responsibilities, and looked at how conventional and new NDT techniques and technology can be used to monitor the health of a particular aspect of a structure during flight.

The aim of the workshop was to inform delegates of the current state-of-the-art of SHM techniques, how they are deployed on aircraft (both civil and military), qualification of an SHM technique and looked at why SHM is used as opposed to normal/routine in-service inspection.

The workshop also explored technologies that are currently being developed with SHM in mind and those that may assist in the future.

This year, the workshop also featured a ‘Prove it!’ session, where equipment manufacturers and technology demonstrators were put on-the-spot to showcase their technology and equipment by inspecting a preselected part and then presenting their findings at the end of the workshop.
