Condition monitoring and diagnosis of rotating machinery are among major scientific problems for improving machine availability, especially in energy production. In addition to traditional methods based on vibration measurement, other alternatives called ‘angular approaches’ based on the measurement of the instantaneous angular speed (IAS) have been emerging in various published works. This paper is dedicated to planetary gear sets.
We study the IAS signal of a planetary gear train in the case of a tooth crack. The latter causes changes in the characteristics of the IAS signal of a gear system, based on which the operating condition of the gear system is monitored to prevent a presence of serious damage.
