Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Competition

Tuesday 9 to Thursday 11 September 2025
Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), UK

Following on from the success of the inaugural Annual Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Competition, the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) is pleased to announce the launch of the 2nd Annual UT Competition. This event will take place on 9 and 10 September 2025 at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), UK, alongside NDT 2025, the Annual Conference of BINDT.

 Support required
If you’re unable to participate in the competition but would still like to support it, the organisers are seeking contributions for the following items:
  • Items are required for participants to scan, particularly weld samples for the Level 2 and Level 3 competitions. For the open competition, and in the spirit of inclusivity for aerospace members, we would also require samples for zero-degree scanning.
  • Equipment is required for scanning items. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are invited to showcase their equipment for participants to use during the competition.
  • Prizes are required for each level of the competition. Previous prizes for the inaugural competition included weld probe kits, cash, funding for training and a UT detector.
If you can provide support for any of the above three options, please email Karen Cambridge at: karen.cambridge@bindt.org.

 The competition
This year the competition will consist of two options. The first competition will assess the general UT skills for two sets of contestants, NDT UT Level 2 technicians and NDT UT Level 3 technicians, and the second competition will be open to everyone.

The tournament will follow a 'knockout' system whereby contestants will have playoffs until one is crowned the victor. A draw will take place in August featuring all selected competitors and will be released on the BINDT social media channels.

A significant cash prize will be awarded to the winner of each draw. The grand final winners will be announced at the NDT 2025 Conference Dinner with a further prize available.

After the competition applications are approved, all participants will be sent a link to complete conference registration. If you are only attending the annual conference to participate in the UT competition, you will be issued a complimentary exhibition hall pass. A discounted ticket for the Wednesday evening awards dinner will also be provided to competition entrants.

 Participant guidelines
Level 2 technicians must have a current PCN level 2 welds qualification.
Level 3 technicians must hold a PCN level 3 in UT plus a Level 2 welds qualification.

All prospective contestants should send an email to Karen Cambridge at: karen.cambridge@bindt.org containing the following information:
  • Name
  • Short biography
  • Valid UT Welds certificate for the relevant draw
  • Profile picture.
Good Luck!
