Professor Chris Atkin to become Engineering Council Chairman

Professor Chris Atkin CEng FRAeS has been elected as the next Chairman of the Engineering Council. He will step into the role at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting in June 2017 and take over from the current Chairman, Rear Admiral Nigel Guild CB CEng FIET FIMarEST MIMA FREng.Rear Admiral Guild, who has led the Engineering Council for the last six years and been a Board Member since 2005, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with, and on behalf of, the Engineering Council. The last six years have undoubtedly been busy and productive and I have enjoyed working with the staff and the many volunteers who support the organisation’s work. The collaborative approach of the engineering profession is one to be celebrated and I am certain that Chris will be a very successful Chairman in taking the Engineering Council forward to regulate, serve and promote the engineering profession for the benefit of society.”
Professor Atkin, who is Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at City, University of London, joined the Engineering Council’s Board of Trustees in 2015 and previously sat on the organisation’s Regulation Standards Committee. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and has undertaken a number of roles for the Institution, including as its current President until May 2017.
Professor Atkin said: “I look forward to the opportunity of becoming the Engineering Council’s next Chairman and working to reinforce the trust that society has in our registered engineers and technicians. I will look to build on the organisation’s existing strengths and relationships and also hope to build momentum around public attitudes to engineering education.”
