Silverwing launches Scorpion2

26/04/2017

Dedicated to advanced NDT inspection technologies, Silverwing has announced the launch of Scorpion2, which brings anticipated improvements to the original Scorpion.

Scorpion has been successfully deployed for 10 years, but technical advances and increasing market demand required a complete technical redesign to meet today’s tough demands. Listening to the large Scorpion user base has led Silverwing NDT to improve the design and performance of the unit, resulting in the arrival of Scorpion2, a state-of-the-art remote-controlled ultrasonic crawler. Scorpion2 is approximately five times faster than its predecessor, measuring thicknesses at speeds of up to 150 mm/s (5.9 in/s).

Scorpion2 has four permanent magnet drive wheels and two encoders, making it possible to compensate for the crawler’s drift from slippage and the weight of the cable. Furthermore, it is significantly leaner in design, making it easier and faster to set up than the original Scorpion.

Scorpion2 benefits from a number of other great features, including the following:
  • The dry-coupled probe wheel removes the need for an external water source, usually needed for UT inspections.
  • The gimballed probe holder enables the inspection of uneven surfaces.
  • The 50 m (164 ft) umbilical removes the need for scaffolding.
  • The ability to programme the length and pattern of scans gives users more flexibility.

Stéfan Parmentier, General Manager at Silverwing, commented: “We are very happy to introduce this new generation of ultrasonic remote-controlled crawlers. We feel extremely confident that the gains to be made in efficiency and accuracy from using Scorpion2 will translate into increased revenue for our customers.”

“We packaged technologically-advanced features in an easy-to-use system that delivers high-quality and reliable data. Doing so, we translated customers’ needs into a new product that will have a direct impact on their daily life at work,” added Edwin Van Der Leden, Product Manager for Scorpion2.
