25/02/2021 2nd NDT Student Challenge takes place virtually
Alongside the 12th International Symposium on NDT in Aerospace, which was held fully online in October 2020, the NDT Student Challenge had to be run as an entirely virtual event as well. Three teams consisting of four master and doctoral students from Germany, Lithuania and China participated. The grand final took place live on ndt.net on 19th January 2021.

The Schaeffler OPTIME condition monitoring system was presented to the market just a few months ago and has now won the Industry 4.0 Innovation Award. This confirms the automotive and industrial supplier’s ambition to shape progress that moves the world. VDE Verlag is presenting the award for the fifth time, in collaboration with the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (ZVEI) and the Standardization Council Industry 4.0. 10/02/2021 Applus+ acquires Saudi Arabia testing and inspection services company
Applus+, a global testing, inspection and certification company, has announced the acquisition of the entire share capital of Soil & Foundation Company Limited and Geotechnical and Environmental Company (which together form the SAFCO Group) from the founding partners. Completion is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2021. SAFCO Group will form part of the Energy & Industry division.

Precision sensor supplier Micro-Epsilon has extended its optoCONTROL 2520 series of optical laser micrometers with the optoCONTROL 2520-95, which provides double the measuring range (95 mm) of the existing optoCONTROL 2520-46. The increased range allows for measurements on larger-diameter parts without the need to use or combine additional sensors.

After thousands of hours of rigorous testing, a new laser radar system that delivers a paradigm shift in shop floor quality control has been introduced by the metrology arm of Japanese camera giant Nikon. The APDIS Laser Radar, an automated non-contact metrology solution, inspects features at double the speed of the previous version and delivers high-accuracy measurements equivalent to those provided by a horizontal-arm coordinate measuring machine (CMM).

As industry faces catastrophic pipe rupture consequences from the presence of hard spots, it seeks new opportunities to ensure the continued safe operation of pipelines through early detection. Most hard spots are the result of unintentional quenching during a pipeline manufacturing process employed prior to 1970. Oil and gas pipelines constantly operate under cyclic stresses, which, combined with certain environmental conditions, may make them highly susceptible to cracking. The brittle and fragile nature of hard spots introduces an extremely dangerous vulnerability to pipelines, as any cracking that occurs in a hard spot will propagate significantly faster than anywhere else on a pipe. Hydrogen stress cracking accounts for the majority of failures associated with hard spots on in-service pipelines. Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) initiating in or around a hard spot can also create the perfect recipe for a pipe failure.
