High-energy CT scanner

08/01/2021

Waygate Technologies, a Baker Hughes business and a world leader in industrial inspection solutions, has launched its first high-energy computed tomography (CT) system: Phoenix Power|scan HE.

With 9 MeV, the Phoenix Power|scan HE packs 20 times more punch in penetration energy compared to the standard of 450 keV. It can therefore scan and measure the internal features of critical high-density components and assemblies. The parts can be up to 2 m in diameter and height and up to 1000 kg in weight. For easy handling and loading, the Phoenix Power|scan HE comes with an integrated crane.

In dual-detector configuration, a linear diode array (LDA) and digital detector array (DDA) detect defects including porosity, foreign material, lack of fusion, positive metals and trapped powder. The high-energy system also precisely measures the internal dimensions of large parts. Additionally, Waygate Technologies has equipped the CT scanner with the company’s patented scatter|correct technology, which delivers high-resolution and impeccable image quality at significantly faster scan times, due to fast cone beam scanning.

It is claimed that the combination of high-penetration energy and image quality makes the Phoenix Power|scan HE the industry’s first high-energy CT scanner that enables inspection of large, dense parts at higher speeds suitable for higher throughput demands in manufacturing environments.

The Phoenix Power|scan HE is installed in the Waygate Technologies Customer Solutions Center (CSC) in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and is now available for pay-per-scan CT inspection services. The company plans to install additional systems at Waygate Technologies’ CSCs in other regions. The company also offers installation of Phoenix Power|scan HE systems on-site at customer facilities.
