Responsive NDT investment in staff sees new qualifications across the business

Four apprentices at Responsive NDT, based at Lillyhall near Workington, have successfully gained PCN Level 2 radiographic testing certification as part of their NVQ Level 3 qualifications.

All four apprentices, Lisa Grears, Gary Linford, Ellis Selkirk and Rikki Tweedie, have been studying in the workplace and in their own time for the past two years, not only for an NVQ Level 3 in non-destructive testing but also for three other industry-required professional qualifications (dye penetrant, magnetic particle and radiographic testing).

Lee Grears, Group MD for Responsive Limited, said: “This is an exceptional result for all four staff members and good news, especially at the moment. They have promising careers ahead, ensuring that Responsive NDT is in a prime position to offer excellent testing resources to businesses across the engineering sector. Ultimately, our work is all about boosting safety across the UK, so I am very proud to see the growth of this team.

“These qualifications are not easy to come by and require a lot of work to achieve the results that these four have seen. Well done to all of them – their new skills will be well used in the months and years ahead.”

Additional qualifications have also been gained by Tony Lister, Director of Responsive’s Mechanical Testing facility, in radiographic interpretation, and by Rikki Dillon for basic radiation safety.

In numbers, this means that Responsive NDT now has a combined radiography resource of eight fully trained and experienced operatives working at its West Cumbria and Manchester sites. The company’s current training and apprenticeship programme has these four NVQ Level 3 students studying non-destructive testing, two NVQ Level 3s studying a range of business administration and human resources and one NVQ Level 5 studying non-destructive testing.

“We encourage all of our staff to progress, not only with their technical knowledge and experience but also into management,” said Lee. “In recent months, staff have become directors, with shares in our businesses too. It is in our blood to look after the next generation and it is a great way to grow.”

Recently, Responsive also gained accreditation with SafeContractor status after a successful audit. This is already opening up new work on sites around the UK.
