Baugh & Weedon is continuing to expand its sales and technical support resources with the appointment of Darren Mapletoft MInstNDT as Applications Manager.

Darren brings with him a wealth of experience gained across a 25-year career in the Royal Navy, where he joined as an Aircraft Engineer working on Sea King helicopter maintenance, vibration monitoring and NDT. Training as an NDT Technician at the Tri-Service School of NDT in 2007, Darren soon became the NDT Team Manager at RNAS Yeovilton and was posted to HMS Illustrious as the NDT Technician in charge of the air engineering mechanical workshops. He re-joined RNAS Yeovilton in 2013 as a Level 2 Technician and in 2014 moved to RAF Wittering to work as a multi-method Level 3 (electromagnetic testing (ET), penetrant testing (PT), radiographic testing (RT) and ultrasonic testing (UT)). Managing the NDT Technical Support and Work Instruction Development Team, Darren was responsible for providing technical support to all RAF regional NDT teams, writing and carrying out final Level 3 approval on all fixed-wing aircraft work instructions. As the RT Level 3, he specialised in film and computed radiography (CR) and used the Carestream HPX system. He converted many of the old film techniques to CR and most recently completely revised the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD’s)RT control procedure to coincide with the use of the Carestream diagnostics kit. As the UK’s main point of contact for NDT on the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, he held a key role in communications with NDT personnel in the US and partner nations.

“Baugh & Weedon is proud to welcome Darren on board as Applications Manager and he will be the UK’s main point of contact for sales and technical support for the Carestream digital NDT range, using his extensive knowledge of the Carestream NDT brand to assist customers with their technical requirements, processes and after-sales care,” said a spokesperson. “He will also be using his experience, especially in the aerospace and military sectors, to provide technical support to customers across the Baugh & Weedon NDE product range; as well as getting ‘stuck in’ to the building processes too! The TruFlux Magnetic Flux Leakage Tank Floor Scanner and the full range of the reputable Baugh & Weedon magnetic test benches will also be on Darren’s radar, together with playing a technical role in various projects working with ETher NDE.”
