Engineering regulator enhances industry-wide security guidance

Security is a central consideration in all engineering practice. As the profession’s regulator, the Engineering Council has refreshed its security guidance resources, to reflect both current and future needs.To enhance the existing Guidance on Security, which is available to all those working in (or studying) engineering, further resources have now been added to support the application of this Guidance. These additional materials emphasise the increasingly central role of data security and cyber security, including related information such as BS EN ISO 19650-5:2020, a specification for a ‘security-minded approach to information management’.
The updated resources also include those developed by the UK Cyber Security Council (CSC), launched in April of this year. The Engineering Council is a founder member of the UK CSC and the refreshed resources for the Guidance on Security now include links to more cyber-specific materials, from both the UK CSC and the National Cyber Security Centre.
The Engineering Council’s Guidance on Security has been developed to support engineers and technicians at any career level, as well as others working in engineering, in identifying, assessing, managing and communicating issues about security.
It is freely available on the Engineering Council website, with a downloadable leaflet and wallet card to keep the information readily to hand.
The Guidance on Security sets out six key principles to guide engineers and technicians in identifying, assessing, managing and communicating issues about security:
1. Adopt a security-minded approach to your professional and personal life
2. Apply responsible judgement and take a leadership role
3. Comply with legislation and codes, understand their intent and be prepared to seek further improvements
4. Ensure good security-minded communications
5. Understand, comply with and seek to improve lasting systems for security governance
6. Contribute to public and professional awareness of security.
All of the Standards and Guidance produced by the Engineering Council are developed with the support and input of expert stakeholders, including professional engineering institutions and Professional Affiliates, to ensure they remain relevant and useful. The new practice-focused resources have been added as useful additions to support application of the Guidance in the workplace.
