Free webinar covering UV light exposure health and safety

30/09/2025

To help companies understand the lesser-known regulations contained within the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010, UV Light Technology is running a free weekly one-hour webinar designed to help employers operate safe use of artificial ultraviolet (UV) light in the workplace. The webinar is informative for anyone responsible for the safe use of UV light in the workplace and is designed to help employers understand their legal obligation under the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, it is a legal requirement to assess the health and safety risks associated with activities affecting people in the workplace and to take measures to control risks and evidence them as far as is reasonably practicable.

Exposure to UV light can cause adverse health effects, such as erythema (sunburn), photo keratoconjunctivitis and arc eye in the short term, known as acute effects, and premature skin ageing, skin cancer and cataracts from repeated exposure in the long term, known as chronic effects. The key is to prevent overexposure by implementing exposure limits.

Occupational UV light exposure in Great Britain is subject to the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010. Its primary purpose is to ensure the safety and protection of workers who may be exposed to artificial optical radiation (AOR) in their workplace.

The regulations specify that employers must conduct a thorough risk assessment to identify sources of artificial optical radiation and evaluate the associated risks to their employees, they must implement appropriate measures and controls, such as comparing employees’ exposure with the exposure limits to control exposure to AOR, and there is a requirement to evidence the assessment and controls.

Designed for organisations already operating UV light in the workplace or those looking to introduce a new UV light process, the webinar covers a variety of applications, with practical examples throughout.

UV Light Technology’s experts explain the potential risks from overexposure to UV light, the statutory exposure limits, legal requirements and what employers need to do to achieve compliance.

Attendees also have the opportunity to discuss their specific UV light scenarios with an experienced team.
