Emergency instrument hire saves inspection contract

01/04/2009

Following the theft of their remote control inspection instrument, Capital Asset Maintenance was able to hire a replacement from Ashtead Technology with just a few hours' notice. The immediate provision of an operational system meant that work could continue and Capital's railway inspection contract was not put at risk.

Cardiff-based Capital Asset Maintenance contacted Ashtead for a Rovver 255 inspection crawler on the afternoon of the day that their unit was stolen and following Ashtead's swift response, they were able to collect a fully calibrated 225 model, along with a Honda generator to power it, the next day.

The equipment was needed to examine a culvert next to a railway line in Swansea. Access to the culvert, which required cleaning, was restricted and potentially hazardous which meant that remote visual inspection equipment, such as the Rovver 225, was required to conduct an internal survey.
Geraint Rees, from Capital Asset Maintenance, explained: "We have used Ashtead Technology Rentals on previous occasions, so we already knew the different types of instrumentation they have in their rental fleet. We needed the Rovver 225 for a 3-day investigation of a large railway culvert and following the theft of our own instrument, we didn’t have much time to source a new one. Thankfully our emergency request was answered by Ashtead and a fully-calibrated Rovver 225 was ready to collect the following morning.

"Without Ashtead's assistance it would have been difficult to have delivered our contractual obligations."

The Rovver 225 is the latest addition to Ashtead's hire fleet of pipe inspection crawler systems, designed specifically to investigate pipes and tunnels ranging from 300 mm to 1200 mm in diameter. Additionally, the remote control camera unit enables the operator to raise and lower the camera, change zoom and orientation and control the focus and lighting levels to ensure optimum viewing conditions in any investigation.

Ashtead's General Manager James Carlyle added: "This example perfectly illustrates our ability to provide customers with the instrumentation they require at extremely short notice. It also represents the benefits of hiring over buying outright for project work of this nature; we have a vast fleet of the latest visual inspection equipment which means that customers are able to use exactly the right technology for the period of the work that is required."
